The anti-aging industry is booming. Aging baby boomers seem to be obsessed with preserving their youthful look. Anti-aging preparations claim to make you look younger as you get older. But are the ingredients in these products safe?

Here are 10 ingredients to avoid in anti-aging preparations:

Propylene glycol is a strong irritant, a neurotoxin (toxic to the nervous system) and may cause kidney and liver damage. It may cause delayed allergic reactions, acne and contact dermatitis. It absorbs quickly and is a penetration enhancer, i.e. it increases the absorption of other ingredients in the product through the skin into the bloodstream.

Diazolidinyl urea is a skin irritant and a potential cause of dermatitis. It is a formaldehyde releaser. Formaldehyde is a Group 1 carcinogen (known to cause cancer) as determined by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Imidazolidinyl urea is a strong irritant. It causes contact dermatitis. It’s also a formaldehyde releaser.

Phenoxyethanol is a skin and eye irritant with a rose fragrance. It can cause contact dermatitis and is harmful if absorbed through the skin.

DMDM hydantoin is another formaldehyde releaser. It may cause contact dermatitis and has cause caused cancer in experimental animals.

Triethanolamine (TEA) is an irritant, a sensitizer and causes contact dermatitis. It may cause the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines in products containing nitrogen compounds. It may also contain nitrosamine contaminants not listed on the label.

Parabens (ethyl-, methyl-, butyl- and propylparaben) are endocrine disrupters. They disturb the hormonal balance in the body. They are absorbed through the skin and may irritate the skin. They have been found in breast cancer tumors, but it is not known if they had a part in causing the tumors.

PEG-n (4-200) is an eye and skin irritant and is hazardous on large areas of the body. It may be contaminated with dangerous levels of the carcinogen, 1,4-dioxane.

HGH is human growth hormone. Some products may contain HGH or ingredients that stimulate the body to produce it’s own HGH. Ironically, the hormones don’t slow the aging process, they just hide the symptoms. Animal studies have shown that those animals which produce more growth hormone in old age have a shorter life span, not longer. Studies have also shown that HGH causes carpal tunnel and diabetes. And it has not been adequately tested.

Ultrasomes, keratinocyte growth factor and DNA enzyme complex are known bioengineered ingredients that are used in some anti-aging products. The biotech industry is not very open about bio-engineered or genetically modified ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products. They’re not required to identify ingredients that are bioengineered and they’re not required to state on the label that a product contains bioengineered ingredients. The safety of bioengineered ingredients has not been adequately studied.

Look for products with safe ingredients like aloe vera, essential oils, shea butter, grape seed oil, emu oil, antioxidants like vitamins A,C and E, green tea and Co-Q10. But also remember, it’s more than just skin care. Slowing the aging process involves eating a healthy diet with lots of healthy anti-oxidant rich foods and enzymes, regular exercise, stress reduction and adequate rest. It’s vitally important to pay attention to your whole body, not just your skin.

Dr. Christine H. Farlow, D.C. has been researching ingredient safety since 1991. She is the author of three books, including the new, second edition of DYING TO LOOK GOOD. To learn more about the safety of ingredients in your cosmetics and personal care products, visit DyingToLookGood.com

Do you know that the ‘average’ woman spends about $600 a year on skin care and color cosmetics, according to the beauty industry? Whether she uses only cleansers and lotions or has an array of beauty products, shopping can be time-consuming and expensive. So, here are some quick tips on how to make the most of your beauty budget.

Part of the ’secret’ is to insist on quality for those items that matter … and the most important items are those that help you care for your skin. Look to see if the product line includes the following steps: cleansing, exfoliating, refining or toning and moisturizing. Then review the ingredients for compatability with your individual skin type and sensitivities. If you’re not sure how your skin will react, ask for samples and test them on your forearm.

Quality isn’t necessarily costly though you may spend a little more to find a product line that is the most effective for you. Conversely, expensive isn’t necessarily the best choice. Very high-priced product lines typically contain rare substances that may or may not work for you. Unless you are already using optimum products for your skin, you should notice a difference within two weeks to a month of starting a new regime. Your skin should appear clearer, smoother and well-moisturized.

After skin care, the right foundation or powder and concealer are important beauty buys. Depending upon the amount of coverage you want, select a foundation, creme to powder foundation, dual coverage powder foundation, pressed or loose powder and concealer that blend as closely as possible with your face. (With foundation, test the shade along your jaw line to compare the color with both your face and neck; watch to see if it “disappears” into your skin.)

Another part of the ’secret’ to making the most of your beauty budget is spending less on color products that change with the seasons such as eye shadows, blushes and lipsticks. Most product lines will offer the lastest "hot" colors, which tend to be similar, so comparison shop. Another idea is to accumulate a palette of primary eye colors which can be mixed to create your own "hot" colors.

There’s no need to spend too much to look your best!

When we talk about life extension we don’t talk about keeping people alive through artificial means, we actually mean extending the normal, natural life of Man.

Definition:
Life is a multi-faceted concept. Life may refer to the ongoing process of which living things are a part; the period between the birth (or a point at which the entity can be considered to be living) and death of an organism; the condition of an entity that has been born (or reached the point in its existence at which it can be established to be alive) and has yet to die; and that which makes a living thing alive.

Source: Wikipedia.org

The term Life Extension now is mainly used in promoting and selling Vitamins and indeed Vitamins or Minerals seem to play an important role in extending life and in earning money for Vitamin manufacturers.

Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw laid the groundwork for Life Extension by practicing on their own bodies by taking controversial supplements or massive doses of supplements, and documenting the results within their own bodies. Their research led to anti-aging breakthoughs that have been exciting and significant.

Most Popular Life Extension Products:

CoQ10
CoQ10 is a nutrient found in each cell of the body. CoQ10 — also spelled CoQ 10 — is found in foods, particularly in fish and meats.

In addition to playing a significant role in the energy system of each of our cells, CoQ10 is also believed to have antioxidant properties. Many people who take CoQ10 notice that this nutrient enhances physical energy.

Melatonin
Melatonin is released from the pineal gland and helps maintain tissues in a young state of health. Melatonin keeps our circadian cycle in tune as it communicates with the body’s cells.

Not only does this hormone work to maintain cell health, it appears to regulate a system of self-repair and regeneration. When this diminishes, our biological functions are impaired.

Melatonin seems to work to help improve sleep. Melatonin seems to increase the speed of falling asleep and seems to add to the quality of sleep in about 60% of people who use it.

Most recent studies also suggest that the lack of Melatonin in the body can promote breast cancer.

In a major breakthrough, researchers have linked exposure to light at night to the growth in breast-cancer tumours. The tumours grew because artificial light interfered with the ability of women to create melatonin, the hormone that regulates the body’s daytime and night rhythms.

DHEA
DHEA is a steroid hormone, a chemical relation of testosterone and estrogen. It is made from cholesterol by the adrenal glands, which sit atop each kidney.

Studies in animals have shown that DHEA can prevent or delay the onset of cancer, "hardening" of the arteries, lethal viral infections, lowered immunity, obesity, and diabetes.

Second Generation Life Extension

Life in the Future

There are visionaries today who consider the awesome benefits to human health and longevity promised by the leading edge of medical science–and what YOU can do today to take full advantage of these startling advances.

Some of these visionaries plan to live forever. No, not just in the history books, but as living, breathing, healthy human beings.

Their idea is that if you can manage to keep your body in good shape for the next 20 years NanoTechnology and BioScience will be so advanced that you can replace or regrow parts of your body so it will never wear out.

These are the actual ideas developed by some visionaries for eternal life:

Step one:
Aggressively slowing down the aging process by eating the right foods, taking vitamins and exercising; in actual fact trying to survive the next 20 years at which time BioTechnology and Nanotechnology will have become so advanced that we can replace ailing body parts at will. .

Step two:
Relying on BioTechnology such as stem cell research, the ability to modify our genetic and protein codes which in turn will slow down or even reverse aging. We have mapped out the human genome. With this information we can now find out the specific functions of our genes. Eventually we will be able to change the genes themselves. We are already able to regrow teeth and soon will be able to regrow cells, tissues and organs and introduce them into our bodies without rejection.

Step three: the use of Molecular Nanotechnology.
Nanotechnology will enable us to rebuild, molecule by molecule, our whole body. People are already working on "intelligent cells". These cells will actually operate as computers which can detect and destroy cancer cells and regrow diseased cells.

So, just make sure you survive the next 20 years.

Aromatherapy also advocates practices of taking bath using one of those exotic essential oils; for many of us, a hot and relaxing bath is both a way to calm down tired bodies and relieve stress. Further more, a few moments to think, ponder, contemplate and meditate can create wonders for the mind and body. A hot bath with one of your favorite oils adds a new experience to your life, which is otherwise straining and equally boring. Essential oils also called “oil of life”, is soothing and refreshing, when added to your bath tub. Thus, these oils compel us to think over using them at least once a day to feel invigorated. Using the bath as an innovative way of administering Aromatherapy is one of the best for numerous reasons.

Your entire dull skin gets a layer of pure essential oils. The misty vapors rising from the hot water enters your olfactory system and lungs. Your mind will be clear and calm, allowing you to concentrate on yourself and the essential oil treatment. It means essential oils bring a celestial experience to your bath room. The hot bath now makes you, in fact, makes you sweat and tired added with a treatment of oils.

Mandatory sleep or renewed vigor will soon follow such a refreshing treatment. Apart from these soothing effects, you can even adjust the level of essential oils to treat some of your skin conditions like acne and scabies. Another advantage of using aromatic oil is relieving your nervous conditions by making your mental constitution stronger and calmer. Some essential oils are known to be very romantic in nature; few drops your favorite oil will help you and your spouse to relax allowing passionate moments to overflow. It can also simply be used to aid in your enjoyment of your bath, to feel the balminess of flowing water.

Using essential oils in the bath is as simple as adding 10 drops just before you enter the tub. You can add, perhaps, lavender or Rose oils or intricately add concocted bath oil containing a number of oils. It is purely personal and you can choose your favorite oil. Floral oils like jasmine or rose oils, usually make perfect bath concoctions, but one can feel free to use a particular oil or blend for conditions they wish to help.

The good effects of aromatherapy bath directly seeps in to respiratory, skin and nervous system to reduce problems. It is also discovered that joint problems and muscle pain can also be greatly helped.

Though soaps and candles containing real, pure aromatic oils can be beneficial too, nothing compares the advantage of direct contact of essential oils with the bath water. You must note its high volatility and instability, so it is prudent, when using them in the bath and add those drops just before you are ready to enter. You must also trap all those steam vapors by making sure that you draw close the shower curtains. This single action will make sure you are reaping the benefits of the essential oils before they evaporate with the hot steam.

Any bath oils containing extracts of Vitamin E, when added to your favorite aromatic oil, can help the essential oil to linger on the surface of the water faster and usually can be placed under hot running water. If you want to create a lively bubble bath setting or special bath, add a bit of dried milk, a bit of good quality hand soap and fresh rose petals plus your oil. Women will find bathing in rosemary water to be particularly beneficial after a stressful day and/or PMS symptoms. Men can use a pungent orange or ylang-ylang, especially in the morning to get them started for a day of work. Aromatherapy oils and their usage are gaining lots of popularity among beauty conscious people of the world; many personal care industries are using more essential oils in their bathing products, than ever before.

In 1490, Ponce de Leon set out to find the fountain of youth. He didn’t find it, and now, more than 500 year later, the only mechanism ever found to prolong life and delay aging is exercise. There is no data whatever to show that antioxidants, vitamins, or anything else prolong life. All tests that are used to measure aging really measure physical fitness. A fit 70-year old will score younger on aging tests than an out-of-shape 20 year old.

Scientists measure aging with a test called VO2max, your maximal ability to take in and use oxygen. Studies from Ball State University, Courtland State, Washington University in St. Louis and Mt Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee show that intense exercise maintains fitness. People who do not exercise lose 15 percent of their fitness per decade, those who exercise at low intensity lose nine percent, while those who exercise intensely barely lose any fitness at all.

In the 1930s, Fred Wilt was an Olympian distance runner. At age 50, he was able to run two miles in less than ten minutes. Those of you who run competitively know that this is a magnificent time and that there are very few high school runners who can run faster than that. He was able to run a 9:40 two mile on training of only five to seven a week, by alternating almost flat-out 200 meter runs with jogging until recovery.

Increasing intensity makes you fit. If you go out and jog the same two miles at the same pace every day, you will not improve and you will not be very fit. However, if you run faster on one day, feel sore on the next day, and then run slowly until the soreness disappears, and then run fast again, you will be able to run faster, become more fit on every measure of fitness, and also test better on the tests that measure aging.

However, with increased intensity comes increased risk of injury. So, before you start an intense exercise program, and before you start lifting heavier weights, running faster, jumping, higher, throwing further, hitting a tennis ball harder, or doing anything that requires increased intensity, check with your doctor. The only problem with this recommendation is that the odds are overwhelming that your doctor won’t know very much about sports, training, or improving physical fitness. But you should at least check with him or her to see if you have a condition that can be aggravated by hard exercise. Also remember that older people can’t train intensely very often. You may have to wait two to ten days between hard workouts.

Titan Laser Information

Titan is the product name given to a procedure that many are calling a non surgical face lift. The Titan is one of the newest products to emerge in the laser skin resurfacing field, offering patients a type of skin treatment that is marked by minimal if any discomfort. The Titan Laser is an infrared-light device used to combat aging by stimulating and restoring collagen that lies below the skins surface. As the skin ages the collagen fibers begin to stretch and the end result is sagging skin. The procedure works via two methods. First it heats the weaker collagen which causes it to immediately contract and thicken. Secondly it creates micro injuries to the dermis layer of the skin which results in it producing new collagen over the next several months.

The Titan Procedure has been used for various areas of the body including parts on the face, neck and body in which wrinkles or mild sagging is starting to appear. The most common areas of treatment are the facial area, with the forehead, cheeks, jowl, and neck being the most often treated areas. The Titan Laser is also utilized to treat other regions such as the stomach, thighs, and arms. Doctors are also finding the Titan procedure to be especially effective in treating more difficult regions of the body such as the elbows and knee areas. These areas were some of the least responsive to previous skin rejuvenation procedures.

Length and details of the Titan procedure

The sessions utilizing the Titan Laser take from 10 minutes to one hour, based on your doctor’s treatment approach. A topical numbing cream is applied to most patients beforehand, but there is little in the way of pain during the procedure. The feeling during the procedure can best be described as a pulse of heat which continually cycles throughout the treatment.

Risks and/or complications related to the Titan procedure

Those receiving treatment from the Titan Laser indicate the procedure is almost pain free. There are few if any side effects associated with treatment via the Titan Laser. Patients may experience slight redness that usually will fade after an hour. Any swelling that occurs should subside within a day. Patients receiving treatment via the Titan Laser may immediately return to work, have undergone what could be called a lunch-time produced.

What makes the Titan procedure attractive is its minimal impact. The procedure is not surgical, but rivals many results from traditional surgery. Furthermore the skin surface is not damaged as the procedure does not extend below the dermis region.

Long-term results of the Titan procedure

Since the Titan Laser works by stimulating the formation of new collagen, ideal results will take approximately three to eight months to materialize. While the Titan Laser procedure is very effective it does have limitations. Individuals with advanced skin aging coupled with sun damage and excessive wrinkles may not be the ideal candidates for the Titan laser procedure.

How much does a Titan Laser procedure cost?

A Titan procedure costs between $1500 to $2500.

Will my insurance cover a Titan procedure?

Because a Titan procedure is considered an elective procedure, insurance usually will not cover the operation.

On the face of it, our human body looks pretty ordinary. The reality is that innumerable and unbelievable complex reactions are going on in our body at all times. Things like growing and aging seem so obvious and unavoidable for all of us. However, the truth is that the process of human growth and aging is not inevitable an unavoidable.

Our knowledge of the human body has revealed to us that growth and aging is the result of release of hormones by the glands existing in the human body. The pituitary gland in the human body releases human growth hormone that is absorbed by organs like the liver. This hormone is the driving force behind the growth that takes place in the human body. If your pituitary gland does not release the human growth hormone in adequate quantity, it will result in stunted growth. On the other hand, if the human growth hormone is released in excess, one gets to see unnatural growth. Abnormal release of human growth hormone is the reason why we get to see people who are very tall or very short.

The human growth hormone is released in large quantities during childhood. As one reaches adulthood, the gland goes on releasing less and less growth hormone. By the time we reach old age, the release of human growth hormone completely stops. Often we witness old people facing problems of wrinkles, loss of memory, slow healing of injuries, malfunctioning of vital organs, reduction in bone density and loss of hair. The reason behind all these problems is the non-secretion of human growth hormone in the body.

Such a discovery has led to the belief that injecting human growth hormone in the body will help us avoid the inevitable process of aging. The reality is that intake of human growth hormone will result in longer and healthier life. That does not mean human growth hormone is an elixir that will permanently stave off aging.

Although human growth hormone therapy is still in the nascent stage, the results of the therapy are very encouraging. External and artificial injection of human growth hormone in the body results in loss of fat and increase in the muscle and bone density. Such a person feels stronger. Injecting human growth hormone results in the person feeling more energetic.

An improvement in the general health and memory makes a person more confident. More often than not, the problem with aging is the loss of confidence. If you cannot see and hear properly, if your injuries take a long time to heal and if you are forced to depend on others for your protection, it leads to loss of confidence in oneself. Human growth hormone can ensure that the loss of self-confidence that accompanies aging can be avoided.
