The skin, as we are all taught in high school, is the largest and the most visible tissue in the human body. Of course it is. It covers us entirely from head to toe. It is our protective casing that allows us to move freely and gives us feedback on external textures, climate and other things associated with the sense of touch. The pores in our skin also helps us to release internal wastes through perspiration. These, among other benefits and special characteristics, make our skin one of the most important parts of our body – and therefore one of the first things to take care of.

We want our skin to be supple and smooth, yet still strong and healthy. There have been countless skin care products and treatments developed over the years that have helped a lot of people and solved many skin problems. However, it’s one thing to cure skin damage and it’s another to protect it. When you were born, your skin was nothing short of perfect. Therefore, the first logical thing to do is to protect your skin from any kind of damage or unwanted reaction from external factors.

Nonetheless, there are numerous things that can damage your skin even without you knowing it. Some of these would be climate or weather, unknown allergies from food or drink, and the most dreaded skin damager of all – age. Though it’s possible to stay away from harsh climates and food you are allergic to, it is sad to note that age is something that we simply cannot avoid. Everything solid in this world wears out with age. However, this doesn’t mean we can’t do anything about it.

There are various products and treatments available for making your skin look younger and less wrinkled, like TCA peels and other various skin peels. Nevertheless, the important thing is to keep your skin as healthy as possible all the time while you’re young, in order to effectively help in slowing down the ageing process. The more careless you are with your skin, the faster it’ll develop wrinkles and look older.

Leading dermatologist Greta Winslow of Wade Skin Clinic advises “….always remember that healthy skin is the result of a healthy lifestyle. And by healthy lifestyle, we mean a balanced diet, lots of water (less sodas and carbonated drinks), sufficient vitamins, regular exercise, enough sleep, no smoking, less alcohol consumption, good exfoliation with skin peels like TCA peels, and effective management of daily stress. It’s also good to suggest that the use of tanning beds and some topical skin treatments or medication that are said to provide “instant” results may be more harmful than helpful. It’s always good to consult with a skin doctor for things you aren’t sure of”

In addition to these lifestyle tips, skin experts say that the best way to care for your skin is to cleanse it as often as possible, or at least on a daily basis. They note, however, that the choice of skin cleanser is critical in having healthy skin. Choose the one that’s mild and with less chemicals. Make up must be totally removed before cleansing and always use only lukewarm water. For additional information, visit http://www.bestskinpeel.com

I recently had the privilege of watching Joe Paterno, head coach of The Pennsylvania State Nittany Lions football team, coach his way to an exciting, (triple overtime!) Orange Bowl win.

‘Joe Pa,’ as he is affectionately known by both critics and admirers, turned 79 in December. He is the oldest active coach of a major football team, finished this season with 10 wins and only 1 loss, and was rewarded with a New Year’s day trip to a major bowl game. He also won this year’s Associated Press "Coach of the Year" honors.

What’s interesting about his achievement is that it comes on the heels of some very tough seasons. Championship games were certainly not predicted. In fact, he had been dubbed "too old" and "past his prime" by the press and others at the university campus.

Also of note? His team beat the only other team led by a coach with more career wins than Paterno – Florida State University’s Bobby Bowden. Coach Bowden is a mere 76 years old.

So why does our culture continue to look at the 40’s and 50’s as our ‘prime’ years? What about people like Paterno and Bowden? They have good company: Picasso, Grandma Moses, Paul McCartney, Fran Goodwin and Lucille Chamberlain… This is a short list of people, past and present, world famous and local, who just seem to produce ‘more and better’ and become more vibrant and productive with every passing year.

Our culture is quick to use age as an excuse for failing performance. Maybe ‘seniority’ just gives us the patience to avoid excuse-making, the confidence to be fully ourselves and the wisdom to know that most things happen in cycles…. and that if we just keep doing what we know how to do, to the best of our ability, we’ll get to play in another championship game – no matter what our talent. Good coaches are never too old to win.

Don’t you just hate it how one part of your face is oily and shiny, while another is dry and flakey? It seems almost impossible to be able to clean both zones equally. Soap just makes the dry areas drier and lotions make the oily areas even greasier. So what’s a woman to do?

The problem may lie in the facial cleansing products that you are using. While they may work well for your T-zone, the chemicals in the product may actually be removing too much of the natural oils from the rest of your face. That’s the evil of manufactured skin care products. Anyway you look at it, it’s practically impossible to buy a completely natural skin care product made from pure organic ingredients. They have to add some chemicals in order to stabilize and preserve the product for a certain shelf life.

The good news is… the solution to your problem may lie right in your own kitchen cabinets.

Homemade natural skin care products don’t contain any additional chemical ingredients that could potentially irritate or harm your skin. The only prospective problem may lie in people who are allergic to certain food ingredients. This is easily overcome by substituting the offending food or ingredient with another similar ingredient. For example, if you are allergic to strawberries you could substitute a cucumber instead.

Not only do homemade skin care products cost a lot less to make, you can easily experiment with what works best for you without breaking the bank. Let’s face it, some of the products on the market cost a small fortune! I know it frustrates me to buy a product for $20 and find out it either doesn’t work or I can’t use it because it makes me break out. It’s much easier to head off to the kitchen, mix up a small sample batch of something and give it a try.

You will find that some recipes have to be mix up just prior to use as they don’t store well, but the majority of recipes can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week allowing you to mix up a small batch to save yourself some time. The following recipes are great for people with combination/oily skin that tend to break out with acne and blackheads. Why not give these a try and see how they work for you?

Facial Cleanser For Normal to Oily Skin

2 tbsp cornstarch
2 tbsp glycerin
1/2 cup distilled water

Mix the ingredients together until smooth. Pour into a jar and place the jar inside a double-boiler pot (do not use direct heat on the jar). Bring the water in the outer pot to a boil and heat the mixture until it is clear and has thickened. (If it thickens too much, add a bit more water). Remove from heat and let cool. This is a good all-over facial cleanser and should keep for 7 to 10 days.

Green Tea Skin Toner

1 teabag of green tea
1/2 cup boiling water

Let the tea bag steep for 2 to 3 minutes in the hot water. Remove the tea bag and let the water cool. Pour into an empty toner bottle or something similar with a small opening. Use with cotton pads like you would regular toner. If you wish to, you could also add a 3 or 4 drops of tea tree essential oil. Tea tree oil is a great antiseptic for pimples, while the oil helps to moisturize the skin.

Facial Scrub (Good for blackheads)

1 part baking soda
1 part water

Mix together into a paste. Gently scrub blackheads for 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse off. Use once or twice a week.

Natural Scrub For Oily Skin

1 part sea salt
1 part lemon juice

Mix into a paste and gently scrub face for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse off. Interestingly, you would think this would be very drying to your skin, but I’ve found it actually leaves your skin feeling clean, refreshed, and soft. Use once a week to remove dead skin cells.

Deep Cleansing Mask

1/2 of a peeled, pureed cucumber
1 tbsp plain, natural yogurt

Mix ingredients together and apply to the face (avoid eye area). Let dry for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Use once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and refresh your skin.

As you can see, making up your own natural homemade skin care recipes can be quite simple and convenient with the right ingredients in the house. After all, if you have to run out to buy some cleanser, toner, moisturizer, etc., why not just stock up on what you need to make your own facial skin care products instead? At least you’ll know exactly what’s contained in each product. Just remember to throw away the old stuff after 7 days and make a fresh batch for the following week. Your skin will thank you for it.

What follows is merely a brief memo on anti-aging, this is not a to be construed as a full recitation or as an entire toolkit for preventative and precautionary practices on anti-aging. Aging is inevitable. But it doesn’t have to boil down to just waiting around for the assault of illnesses, wrinkling, degeneration and weakness to attack you without appropriate strategic preparation. You cannot stop the aging process, but you can undoubtedly slow it down.

We all appreciate beauty, in fact a beautiful woman is and historically always has been the most worshipped of all beautiful things and nothing, I repeat nothing is more mind-boggling than a 40+ woman that looks like a 25-year-old and has the vitality and stamina to boot. Well, be boggled no more, the secret lies ahead! My wife is an ageless, beautiful and vibrant woman; she is a fantastic mother, loving, caring, and giving wife and thoughtful friend. She is lean, femininely muscular and fit. Her skin is tight and still full of collagen…she is absolutely stunning and looks amazing! Oh, by the way…she is 44 years old! She looks under 30 and is an example to all women; I am so enamored and so, so proud and you can see what I am talking about, just check her out for yourself at www.infinitywellnessspa.com. What is the elusive secret of the ages? Well, it is actually amazingly simple…here is the long and the short of it.

As complex as the media has made this out to be, there really are only six primary strategic points necessary to concentrate your attention on initially to manifest a more youthful, functional YOU as you grow into maturity. Here they are!

1. WATER, WATER…Consume 8 to 12 glasses of water every day. Water, the miracle elixir, keeps skin hydrated, cleanses cells and eliminates toxins, enhances the circulation of the nutrients in the body, and aids in helping body systems to work more efficiently. With too many beverages available in the market today, keep in mind that water is still the best option.

2. GOALS… goals are something that are tangible, specific and have a deadline and a date on them. Know where you want to go, how to get there and by when. Setting goals and having very specific objectives is absolutely vital.

3. FOOD…Obtain and maintain a healthy supportive eating regimen. This means incorporating fresh and essential foods like the all-important vegetables and fruits, seeds and nuts, and grains and beans in your diet. Consumption of fish, chicken, and meat must be done in appropriate portions for you the individual. Fats and proteins are crucial in the diet, but excess consumption of any of these is not prudent.

NOTE: Adapting to a vegetarian based diet often will result in a healthier and longer life. In contrast to those whom eat more meat, vegetarians are less likely to be inflicted with diseases and the only really downside is the challenge of maintaining adequate protein intake.

4. MOVEMENT…Exercise recurrently. A whole, complete and well-balanced exercise regimen must include developing a proper resistance program, flexibility, and improving strength and endurance. These can be achieved through weight training, stretching, and engaging in frequent aerobic exercise. Regular exercise will not only relax the mind, spirit and the body from the everyday feelings of anxiety, rage and frustration; but it can also keep you younger.

5. YOUR SACRED SELF…Love yourself unconditionally. It has been proven since the dawn of man that this is one of the most important keys to achieving a healthy long and fruitful life. You are the only you that you have…love yourself.

6. ELIMINATE TOXIC CONSUMPTION…Smokers and or drinkers typically look a 10 to 15 years older than they are. They also bring upon the added risk of contracting smoking and or drinking-related diseases. They acquire more wrinkles on their faces; develop a pallid color to their skin, usually suffer from depression or low-self esteem and numerous other conditions I will not comment on in this article. Numerous studies and researches also show that smokers are indirectly making their lives shorter.

This memo is really just a reminder, a whisper of a wake-up call and if you carefully follow and apply the healthy habits mentioned above you will realize a bounty of benefits that WILL otherwise escape you.

Anecdotally… Every human being either fears aging or is lying about it. But to those people who get the big picture, are strong-willed and have an impeccably positive attitude and outlook about life, the act of aging can just be considered as just another challenge that they will endure triumphantly through. Life is a truly about the journey…not the destination!

Many women today are experimenting all over the globe with new hair styles. But the challenge lies with what to ask for? When you enter the salon and sit with your stylist what are you looking for? a lightweight cut that will boost volume and texture in your style? For instance do you want mess appeal? Where you can wake up and rub a putty or clay into yoru palms and rub vigorously into your hair? Or Blast your hair dry with the stongest setting on your hair dryer for a natural body look? How about cuts emphasising sleek hair like asymmetric bobs, long layers and full fringes?

With a good hair style you can maximise your hair’s natural flow and remove dulling split ends. Some of the most wanted hair styles this fall are super smooth bobs with a delicious dark shade. Or try sectioning clips that are handy for getting a perfectly sleek look. Glossy locks are back and looking healthier than ever so use a deep conditioner.

Dark shades are back for fall and flattering a short cut while boosting shine. If you prefer you can also go for slices of light and dark tones to give you extra texture. If you are considering short then consider this. Short looks are best for girls with small features, round faces adn oodles of confidence. Fine hair with a ton of texture can be achieved by going short. Before you decide book a consultation with your stylist this way you are prepared for the cut and have had enough time to decide what is right for you.

Once upon a time, a fair maiden met and married her long-time love. They had many children, lived in a beautiful home and enjoyed all of life’s offerings.

One day as this mother, wife, lover of life, walked past a mirror, she caught a glimpse of herself and wondered, “Who is that ‘old woman”?” After this rude jolt, she realized that her former beauty had begun to fade. What was happening to the face she had grown to love? How and when did the sagging begin? Was it blatantly apparent to everyone but her? Was there a way to find prettiness again? What were her options to regain a shapely, sculptured face?

Sadly, this “fairy tale” is repeated many times a day. The graying of America is a fact; while the Baby Boomers are turning 60, many men and women are endlessly searching for anti-aging solutions. They seek the latest and greatest remedy, choosing lotions and potions promising a “scientific breakthrough” just hoping that something will stop the tired, old look they are portraying. These aging boomers and zoomers want to look as young as they feel; rather they’re faced with thinning hair, bodies that have become misshapen and faces that are less recognizable.

Certainly there are options. Pick up any magazine or newspaper, get online and you’ll see plenty of compelling ads for plastic surgery, injections and treatments aimed at helping one look younger. Even if some or all of these methods are tried, the fact remains that aging gracefully is more than just “nips and tucks”. Frankly, it’s an inside job that starts with “the man in the mirror” and this is where the magic begins.

Face work in front of mirror is practiced by many models, singers, speakers and actors as they hone their craft for the audience and the camera. At first, you, like others, may feel uneasy as you steadily peer at yourself for a period of time; however, the mirror can be very revealing of who you really are and how you look to the world at large.

Here’s how “Mirror Work” begins: Be alone. Close the door and move close to the mirror so you can intimately examine your face. Observe how you smile. Keep your face relaxed. How do you appear? Do you look angry or sad? Are your mouth corners down-turned? Can you determine what’s changed in your appearance? Can you say “I love you and I forgive you” to that reflection looking back at you? Talking out loud to your mirror can subtly begin altering who you are, how you think about yourself and how much you can love yourself.

Facial exercise is one of the easiest ways to incorporate “Mirror Work” into a daily routine. That’s right, exercise for your face is just as important as exercise for your body. When you are exercising your face on a regular basis, you are constantly observing your face in the mirror while you execute the movements to ensure that your finger and thumb placements are accurate. As you spend more time gazing at your features, a certain type of acceptance begins to take hold in your psyche. Maybe you will begin to notice that you are more accepting of yourself and others, that little annoyances are indeed trivial and that you are becoming more becoming.

Yes, the magic of facial exercise works from the inside out, first making an important shift in the shape and contour of the muscles supporting your skin, but most importantly, there is magic when you shift your thinking to acceptance, love and peace of mind. There is magic as you understand that both physical and emotional change is possible. Like the song says, “If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change”.

It is pretty well known that different people get different results with the same skin care products. This can be caused by variations in body chemistry, but more often than not it’s because everyone applies skin care products differently.

Of course, if a particular product doesn’t give you the results you expect, it doesn’t always mean you are applying the product incorrectly. Unfortunately, many products just don’t work as advertised, no matter what you do! To top that off, some products may work for some people but not for others even when used properly. Nevertheless, when a product doesn’t work, it may often be due to incorrect application.

Products like skin creams, gels. or lotions are a mixture of chemicals that have a biological action, applied topically to the skin. So the effectiveness depends on whether the active ingredients work, and whether they are absorbed properly into your skin. Your skin’s temperature, hydration, environment and other factors will influence your skin’s ability to absorb the active ingredients in a product. To be sure that you get optimal effectiveness of you skin care products:

  • Cleanse skin before applying any products. The best time to apply is right after you come out of a warm shower or bath because not only is your skin clean, but it is also moist and warm, so it will absorb whatever you apply much better. Do not wash with hot water because excessive heat accelerates aging. Water should be comfortably warm but not hot. However, if you plan to apply anything oily that blocks the pores, splash cool water on yourself to close pores. Just pat dry with a towel. Also, use a charcoal shower filter to prevent exposure to the chlorine in the water. You probably drink bottled or filtered water - but you can absorb more chlorine through your skin during a shower than you would get from an 8 oz. glass of water!
  • When cleansing your skin, don’t use regular soap or shampoo, they’re much too drying. Use a good moisturizing soap, a skin cleanser, or plain warm (not hot) water.
  • The top layer of skin is mostly made from dry, dead cells. When this layer becomes too thick, either from aging or poor skin care skin, the active ingredients of a skin care product have trouble penetrating. Professional microdermabrasion safely removes that top layer of skin, revealing the healthier, younger-looking skin underneath and allowing skin care products to be better absorbed for greater effectiveness. In addition, microdermabrasion done regularly strengthens the skin by stimulating elastin and collagen production, which helps diminish wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars and many other blemishes.
  • Use short, firm strokes to apply skin care products. Do not stretch the skin. Do not rub. After applying, gently massage the products into your skin by tapping the area with your fingers for 30 seconds or so.
  • When using a professional microdermabrasion product at home, it is important to read the directions and follow them very carefully. Remember, professional microdermabrasion is usually applied with expensive machines and medically-trained professionals. You can save a lot by doing it yourself, but don’t be over-eager to get that 10-years-younger look. Apply the sponges gently the first time - let your skin adjust to the application. Add a little more time and pressure each application, about 2 weeks apart, up to a maximum of 3-5 minutes (depending on the sensitivity of your skin).
  • If you have sensitive skin or allergies, always test the products you want to use first on a small patch of skin on your underarm (the soft skin on the bottom of your forearm).
  • DO YOU HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN?

Did you know sensitive skin is very common? More than 40% of people say they have it. Its causes include age, heredity, gender, and racial differences. These questions below can help you find out if your skin may be sensitive. Of course, a trip to your dermatologist is the best way to find out!

    1. Does your skin get extra dry after you wash it with soap?
    2. Does your skin get extra oily and break out after you use particular types of moisturizers?
    3. If you answered Yes to one or both of these questions, you may have sensitive skin.

    4. Does your skin get red, itch, burn, or feel “tight” after coming into direct or indirect contact with perfumes and/or particular shampoos, shaving creams, detergents, dish soaps, hair sprays, cleaning products, or deodorants?
    5. Irritants to sensitive skin include many household and personal products. The fragrances and dyes in just about every household product, and many personal care products, can cause irritation either from direct contact or even from deposits left on your clothes, towels, or bedding. If you have any of the classic signs and symptoms of sensitive skin in Question 3, try to use hypoallergenic products without ingredients known to cause skin reactions.

    6. Does your skin get red, itch, burn, or feel “tight” after extended exposure to sun, wind, heat, or cold?
    7. Sensitive skin often reacts to extreme weather conditions. In fact, anything in the environment that damages your skin’s natural protective barrier against water evaporation — called sebum — can irritate sensitive skin.

    8. Do you have acne or psoriasis?
    9. People with acne, psoriasis, or skin conditions like eczema often have sensitive skin. These conditions impair immune system functioning and/or destroy the skin’s protective barrier. If you have of these conditions, you may have sensitive skin.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I miss my old blue jeans. You know, the ones with the waist measurement that is a smaller number than the length? And sometimes I don’t care at all. Frankly, it’s a tough balance. Every day we are inundated with television, magazine, and newspaper stories whose marketing messages tell us to be "cool" and "in" we have to be slim, supple, strong, and of course and especially, young. Just what is ‘fit’ after fifty?

Since we can’t just wind back the clock what can we do to be fit? Is it really important? And are those flat tummies, six-pack abs and well-muscled arms and legs truly a sign of fitness or are they an attempt to look younger than we really are? In short, what is fitness and how does an older person set out to be in shape?

If you are as curious about these questions as I am, then you might enjoy reading Younger Next Year by Chris Crowley and Henry Lodge, MD. Subtitled, ‘A Guide to Living Like 50 Until You’re 80 and Beyond’ the book goes into great detail about the importance of exercise as we age. An entertaining read, it also presents convincing data that correlates with that of Harvard researcher George Valliant, M.D. Valliant (whose recent work is titled ‘Aging Well’) has conducted more than forty years’ research and established that one of the eight important components of successful aging is physical fitness. Translation: staying active is good for you.

It’s not too late to return to a form of exercise that you once loved…. or to find a ‘new love’! (Exercise is good for your love life, too.) Senior Centers everywhere offer programs to help you get started or stay motivated – and some are even designed for people who have trouble standing and walking. Check with your doctor…. Start slowly…. But get moving – it’ll keep you going.

Make up does wonder to the overall image. It makes the face polished and pretty looking. I have met one too many women who told me they have no time for make up application. These women are definitely at a disadvantage in the job market, because women who put make up on, makes about 35% more than those who don’t.

A perfect make up application has many steps. However, some days, women have to wake up and run out for work, with no time for breakfast or a long make up routine. If you are a busy woman with no time in the morning, follow this quick make up routine that will guarantee you looking simple and fresh.

These are the tools and make up you must have on hand – face powder, big powder brush, lipstick, eyelash curler, mascara and concealer.

Be sure the concealer is a shade lighter than your face. By the time it covers the dark blemish, the colour of the coverage will be very close to your natural skin tone. The face powder colour is to match your own face colour. Use a lipstick that is a shade or two darker than your lips – for radiance. As for mascara – if you are a brunette, you may choose very dark brown to black. However, if you are blond or very fair, use taupe or medium brown instead for more harmony.

Here are the steps for a 2 minute make up application:

1. Wash, tone and moisturize your face, apply sunscreen, then put some lipbalm on the lips.

2. Dab on concealer using your finger tip – preferably your ring finger. Dab it on on any blemishes you have, as well as on your undereye circles. Blend well.

3. Dust on face powder with a big fluffy powder brush.

4. Put on lipstick.

5. Curl your eyelashes, sweep on mascara.

Voila - simple and fresh. Now you are ready to rush out!

Are the growing wrinkles on your face giving you sleepless nights? Cosmetic market is flooded with innumerable types of lotions and creams that give assurance of reducing the wrinkles helping you look young. But, these cosmetic products contain harmful chemicals which may help you at present but can harm your skin in the future. At this point of time a question may arise in your mind that – “Is there any other alternative or option which can help you, without leaving any adverse affect”? Yes, the answer is “fruit extracts” that can help you look younger and that too a natural way.

Fruit extracts are prepared from fruits with little or no outside ingredients. Fruits such as apple, banana, custard apple, guava, lime, mango alphonso, orange, papaya, pineapple, strawberry are commonly used for making fruit extracts products.

Use of fruits in cosmetic functions is mainly due to the presence of vitamins and alpha Hydroxyl acids (AHA) such as glycolic, lactic, malic, citric and tartaric acids. Fruit extracts are known to have refreshing, purifying as well as soothing and hydrating properties. They are used for caring and grooming body, skin and hair.

Variety of fruit extracts are available in the market to suit perfectly to all skin types and hair texture. Deciding which fruit extract product to buy and from where must be bewildering you by now.

Let me firstly answer the former part of the question. To find which fruit extract to buy, you initially need to do a bit of research. Find what type is of skin texture do you have is it oily, dry or normal. If this task seems tough, you can seek for this information from professional advice from cosmetologist, who can guide you in a better manner that which fruit extract product will suit your skin type.

The next thing you need to do is to search through the market about all the available sellers or companies of the particular fruit extract that you are looking for. You can go out and can shop for them in the cosmetic shop but in case you don’t want to get into all these hassles, you can look for online cosmetic sellers. Now a days number of well known companies have open up their websites, so that a customer can look at all the products they offer at one place. Go through the various websites, you can read the feature of each fruit extract and can find the suitable fruit extract product that suits your needs to the best and that too at a much lower price than that available in the open market.

Growth of the fruit extracts usage in other words organic food segment has bang upon the "natural cosmetics" industry by raising consumers’ expectations. The positive image of fruits positive in food has now moved across to cosmetic products such as fruit extracts and many more. Get a new young look with fruit extracts and let other guess what your right age is.
