Summer time is just around the corner and you want to be ready with that beautiful bronze all-over tan look. Yes I thought so, and who doesn’t!

But before heading over to your local tanning salon or taking those tanning pills, there are some essential facts about tanning that everyone ought to know. Tanning is fine but it should be done very carefully and you need to be aware of the risks and dangers associated with the various types of tanning options available to you.

The major danger with sun tanning is the exposure to ultraviolet light. Extended exposure to ultraviolet radiation from whatever source ages the skin. It also has the potential to cause what’s known as solar radiation damage, and could also lead to cancer of the skin. So the implications of sun tanning are not something to be taken lightly.

Exposure to ultraviolet light can also be responsible for rashes and sunburn. And it is not regularly known that ultraviolet light can also cause fungal skin infections and contact dermatitis. Indeed whether you are tanning in natural sunlight or using a tanning bed, ultraviolet is present in both, so utmost care is required. You should always bear in mind that there is no such thing as totally safe ultraviolet radiation.

Excessive tanning can result in skin conditions such as melasma, whose telltale sign is brown patches on the face, actinic keratosis (AK), and atypical nevus. And certain medications, including birth control pills, can make your skin more susceptible to sunburn. People with existing skin conditions must therefore take extra care when in the sun.

The intention here isn’t to put you off tanning altogether, but to simply put you on your guard to be very careful whilst tanning and to be aware constantly of the degree of risk you are taking. As the saying goes – forewarned is forearmed!

Most people, typically women, begin their tanning habit as part of a beauty regime, frequently when quite young. So if you must tan, then let’s take a look at the precautions you can take to protect your skin.

The safest way to tan is to do it slowly and gradually over as long a period of time as possible. And always use sunscreen when out in the sun and protective goggles provided in tanning salons. These are two of the fundamental rules you should rigidly stick to.

It is recommended that people with certain skin conditions should use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. But if you do have any pre-existing skin conditions, always consult with your doctor first.

Sunscreen should be applied all over any skin to be exposed at least a half hour before commencing tanning, whether in direct sunlight or in the salon. And if you engage in any outdoor activities for extended periods of time, sunscreen should be applied about every two hours.

However, the news isn’t all bad. Indeed sun exposure in moderation can be good for the skin. Sufferers from eczema, pruritus, psoriasis and other skin conditions can actually see improvements with moderate exposure to the sun. But as with everything, tanning sensibly and in moderation is the key.

Of course there are also alternatives to tanning in direct sunlight or using tanning beds. For example sunless tanning is becoming increasingly popular. In sunless tanning, you will enter a room and a machine will spray you with a product that darkens the skin. This spray contains the chemical DHA (an abbreviation for dihydroxyacetone), a substance that gives skin a tan color. This chemical has actually been approved in the United States as safe to use for over twenty-five years.

Obviously sunless tanners are for external use only and when they are being applied, you should ensure that you adequately protect your eyes, nose and other sensitive parts of the body.

You might also have come across tanning pills. These can be found on sale at some tanning salons. However, at least in the United States, they are not currently approved as safe and have been associated with certain types of eye disorders. Some tanning pills have also been linked to liver damage and to urticaria, a skin condition which produces severe itching.

In conclusion, we all want a healthy skin and to look our best in the summer with a beautifully tanned body. Tanning is fine, but do it safely and be aware of how long you are exposed to the sun and harmful ultraviolet radiation. Keep in mind these guidelines and you will be less likely to encounter any serious problems when tanning.

Natural beauty is the ideal many people strive to achieve when they purchase make-up, creams, shampoos and other forms of cosmetics. But what really constitutes natural beauty, and how can it be achieved?

Many consumers, in an attempt to cleanse, tone, moisturize, mattify, shine, colour, enhance and so on, have overloaded their skin and their cabinets with too many needless products. Experts have found that 63 percent of all women complain of having developed ’sensitive skin’, and many of these complaints can be traced back to an overcomplicated skin care regimen (Fairley, 2001). In contrast, the needs of human skin are simple. They are cleansing, moisture, nourishment and protection. Skin which suffers from burning, reddening, pimples, rashes and other symptoms similar to these may be caused by or made worse from adverse reactions to the cosmetic products overloading many women’s cabinets. Often many of these products claim to alleviate or eliminate the very symptoms they are causing (Begoun, 1991).

When selecting skin care, it is best to choose a product formulated for your skin type. Everyone’s skin is individual and varied, but to assist in product selection, and in understanding what your own skin needs, the following skin types have been generalized.

- Balanced, which is neither oily nor dry, and similar to the skin type of children.

- Oily

- Dry

- Sensitive, which is a condition involving reddening, burning or rashes when a cosmetic is applied.

- Problem, which is prone to acne and breakouts.

- Combination, which is most skin, containing oily and dry patches.

Beautiful skin can be obtained by making good choices for your skin, such as using cosmetic products and make-up which are truly natural. Eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, water and healthy oils (such as polyunsaturated fats, essential fatty acids found in flax seed oil, olive oil, etc.) all assist in achieving and maintaining healthy skin. Lastly, adequate rest, sleep and exercise also contribute significantly to beautiful skin.

Simple Skin Care Steps:

- Gentle cleansing - depending on your skin type or preference, choose a natural soap.

- Toning - use a toner which is alcohol-free, infused with essential oils

- Daytime moisturizing - light or rich skin moisturizer

- Nighttime moisturizing - use facial oils formulated with essential oils

Make-up:

Choose make-up which is made with all natural ingredients and colours, regardless of one’s age. All faces look fresh and naturally beautiful when colours which reflect the earth’s vibrant range of hues are applied. Rainbow-like colours, or deep, dramatic shades cannot be obtained naturally in make-up without synthetically derived colours. These colours rarely look natural, are often trendy and go out of style quickly.

Great looking skin does not mean flawless, masked skin. Rather, lets reconstruct our notions of what constitutes ‘beautiful skin’ and ‘beautiful faces’, because perfection does not exist in the natural world, nor does it exist in human beings. Computers, cameras, lighting and other sophisticated technologies create "flawlessness", to create an ideal image no one can attain. Instead, beautiful skin and natural beauty is skin that is free from harmful chemicals, hydrated from within and on the surface, fed with balanced nutrition and wise food choices, and regulated with reasonable exercise. A positive outlook on life and an optimistic perspective also contribute to natural beauty, inside and out.

As we said good-bye to 2005 we also said good-bye to the top 2005 Celebrity hairstyles. Everywhere you looked, you could see celebrities with many different and fashionable hairstyles from short and sweet to long and elegant, from curly or wavy to up-styles. No matter what the style these celebrities were wearing, they made a fashion statement that everyone else followed after.

Two of the most popular celebrities that hit the scene were Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez. Each of these celebrities had a hairstyle that no one else could touch and until recently, many of us only dreamed we could have a Jennifer Aniston Sedu hairstyle or a Jennifer Lopez Sedu hairstyle. The secret behind their gorgeous hairstyle is of course partly due to the sedu flat iron, not to mention what they do prior to using this wonderful sedu flat iron. They both must use a conditioning shampoo and then dry well and again add more conditioning to assist in straightening their hair and making it very soft and flexible. The next step in the Jennifer Aniston sedu hairstyle is to add equal parts of shaping gel and calming serum massaged into the hair. Using a big round hairbrush and your blow dryer, you will be simulating how Jennifer Lopez sedu hairstyle is created. The next thing these two Celebrities have done is the flattening with the sedu flat iron.

Now if we decide to wear a Jennifer Aniston sedu hairstyle or a Jennifer Lopez sedu hairstyle we can have practically the same except we will be creating the style in the privacy of our homes without all those expensive stylists, unless we have the desire to go out and find one that will treat us just as special.

Will the 2006 hairstyles give us the same great looks with celebrity hairstyles or is there a change a coming? The new in fashion for celebrity hairstyles, or what designers are saying, is that short hair is coming back in style. The bob is one of the hairstyles that is making its way to the big screen and all around Hollywood. This celebrity hairstyle is easy to manage, looks great, and may become the top 2006 hairstyle. Curls are coming back as well in all kinds of lengths from short to long and romantic.

I guess we will have to wait and see if the Jennifer Aniston sedu hairstyle or the Jennifer Lopez sedu hairstyle will be one of the prominent celebrity hairstyles in 2006 or if someone else with a bob style or a curly style makes the headlines.

Spending 5 minutes on your face:

FACE

Cold winter winds deplete your skin of moisture. After cleansing, apply a hydrating mask: leave on for 3 mints. Then rinse off. Next, apply moisturizer. Look for a formula that replenishes nutrients naturally found in skin. Vitamin A & E.

MAKEUP

Apply gel-based blush. Blend it in with your fingertip, then top with a powder bronzer. The combination creates a natural-looking healthy flush. Add color and softness to your lips with an emollient berry or burgundy hued lip balm.

Spending 1 minute on your face:

FACE

Use cleansing cloths. They are really quick and convient. And if you use cloths that contain moisturizers, you can cut your morning skin-care to one step.

MAKE-UP

Use mascara. If that’s all the time you have use it, then add a little lip gloss and you’re good to go.

Ingredients you have in the house you can add to your bath water: 1 cup of powdered milk…great for softening the skin

Sprinkle a couple drops of your favorite perfume into the running bath water.

Rose water

Put oatmeal into a mesh bag ( use an old vegetable bag or laundry sock/lingerie) holder tie onto spout and let running water over it.

If hubby buys you roses for a special occasion save some petals to float in the water along with the instant dry milk…wonderful you’ll feel like a princess.

Oh yeah and after you let the oatmeal mesh bag run into the bath water use it to exfoliate your skin by rubbing it all over. Follow with a good moisturizer.

Out of your bubble bath use baby’s. My favorite is the lavender kind…. and I use the baby shampoo too!

When you begin to search for that perfect long hairstyle, medium hairstyle or short hairstyle that will compliment your features you will first have to decide what shape your face is, the type of hair you now have, and of course your own unique personality. If you only go by the shape of your face and ignore your own personality then you may not be very happy with the outcome.

The basic face shapes include oval, rectangular or oblong, round, square, heart, triangular and diamond. To determine what your face shape is you will need to first measure your face crosswise the top of your cheekbones, next measure your jaw line from the fullest point to the fullest point crosswise, next measure your forehead crosswise, and last measure from your hairline to the bottom of your chin. Remember to write down each measurement as you go.

You should be able to tell with these measurements, which shape face you have. Now, on to deciding which hairstyle looks the best with your face shape.

An oval face shape gives you the opportunity to wear practically any hairstyle from long hairstyles to medium hairstyles to short hairstyles. Now this is where your personality kicks in. According to the activities that you enjoy you may wish to wear your hair shorter instead of pulling it back to enjoy participating in sports or keeping your hair out of the way for most activities. To get an example of celebrities with oval shape faces and the variety of hairstyles that look great on them take a look at Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, and Mariah Carey.

If your face shape is rectangular or oblong your best bet would be short hairstyles or medium hairstyles. Bangs will do wonders for giving your face a softer and more gentler look. Celebrities with rectangular faces include Kirstie Alley, Stephanie Seymour and Janet Jackson.

A round face should wear short hairstyles that sweep back away from the face, adds more fullness and height at the crown. Kate Winslet, Christina Ricci, and Drew Barrymore all have round faces and look great with a variety of hairstyles.

Square face shapes should wear short hairstyles to medium hairstyles and should stay away from straight long hairstyles. Celebrities with square shape faces include Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock and Holly Marie Combs.

Heart shape faces should wear hairstyles that are either chin length or long hairstyles and short hairstyles should be avoided. Michelle Pfeiffer, Lucy Lawless, and Claudia Schiffer all belong in the heart shape face club.

If you have a triangular shape face then this is the exact opposite of the heart shape face. You should wear short hairstyles. Kathy Ireland is a great example of a celebrity with a triangular shaped face.

The diamond shape face is as great to have as an oval. You can wear short hairstyles, medium hairstyles and long hairstyles and look absolutely gorgeous. Examples of this include celebrities such as Sophia Loren, Katherine Hepburn, and Linda Evangelista.

How can you tell if your skin is talking to you? Would you know if you have been ignoring it? The way I see it, to know if your skin is talking to you, is simple. Look at it, see if you notice any symptoms such as acne, flakiness, chapping, brown spots, redness… I think you get the picture. Our skin talks to us, by exhibiting symptoms to tell us something is wrong. When we begin to see symptoms it is time to take action, this is what I refer to "listening" to our skin.

There are many actions you can take, but the one we tend to overlook is investigating the skin care products you use.

*acne,pimples
*oily skin
*dry skin
*brown spots, discoloration of the skin
*blackheads
*dull skin
*red, blotchy skin

Did you ever consider maybe the symptoms listed above are all caused by the skin care products you use on your skin everyday?

Well folks…….they are.

You may need to start listening to your skin, it may be talking to you…and you may be ignoring it. Your skin knows what it needs and you may need to start taking the actions to give it what it wants. Stop ignoring your skin and start listening to it. You will be very happy you did. Consider a change and try something different.

My name is Alayna and I am a Licensed Esthetician. After attending Beauty College in San Diego, California, I began to work in day spas, a wellness center and taught skin care classes. Actually after all of my education and experience working with all sorts of skin care products, I thought I knew all there was to know about the products we all purchase. After extensive research I now know that a number of these products that I’ve used can be harmful and cause certain risks.

I personally am not into spending a fortune on skin care products and facial treatments, but I want the safest and best products for my skin. Today, I experience the benefits of using products with the purest natural ingredients for my skin and giving my skin what it needs to look and feel amazing. Isn’t this what skin care is all about? I enjoy helping people find the safest, most pure and natural skin care products and help them to be in the most natural state of well-being. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
