Once again, winter has faded into Spring and Spring has burst into Summer along with Summer skin. Next comes the invincible Summer sun, your skin’s arch-enemy, particularly if you play or exercise outdoors.

Most people know that using sunscreen protection is essential. There are a number of ways to promote a healthy glow without exposing your skin to harmful rays. To help avoid Summer skin when playing or exercising outdoors on a hot, sunny day here are a few tips.

Lightweight and light colored clothing combined with plenty of sunscreen protection on exposed and unexposed skin is a good way to protect yourself.

If overheating isn’t a concern, dark colored, tightly woven clothing is more effective at blocking UV rays. Light colored clothing lets the sun and UV rays reach the skin more easily.

Another barrier against sun damage comes in the form of eyewear. Protect not only your eyes, but also the skin around them by wearing sunglasses that block 90 percent to 100 percent of the sun’s UV rays.

Always wear a hat. Though a cap may be more comfortable for jogging, try a wide brimmed hat that will shade your neck and face while gardening or walking outside.

Now that you know how to protect the skin’s surface, it’s time to start thinking about what you can do to make a healthy glow from the inside out. You’re already off to a good start with some form of exercise, which gets the blood circulating and delivers fresh oxygen to the skin all over your body.

The next step is to drink plenty of water. Outdoor play or exercise, especially in the Summer, increases your risk of dehydration. This is one risk you don’t want to take since it not only affects your performance and robs your skin of vitality, but also may be potentially hazardous to your health.

Be sure to drink fluids before, during and after physical activity. To replenish your fluids after any outdoor activity, weigh yourself before you participate and then weigh again after. Any weight you lost is water and should be replaced by drinking two glasses (16 ounces) of water for every pound you have lost.

Summer is a time for sun, fun and physical activity. Sipping on a cool drink, participating in your favorite activity and enjoying the long days of summer. No matter what you like to do, with a little insight and these few tips you can help alleviate the effects of Summer skin and make your Summer one you will enjoy.

Upper Arm Lift – Cosmetic Surgery Procedure

As the human body ages our skin becomes looser and less elastic, causing it to droop and sag. One of the most common places this effect of aging is seen is the upper arm. A growing number of men and women are having a procedure called brachioplasty performed to reverse this. Brachioplasty tightens and reforms the muscles of the upper arm into a more attractive shape.

This procedure starts with a small incision within the inside of the arm. The incision starts at the elbow and travels up to the armpit. The surgeon can then remove any excess skin. After the skin has been separated from the underlying tissue, the muscle is reshaped and reformed to better retain its shape. If needed, the doctor may choose to perform liposuction. The result will be a firmer and more attractively sculpted arm.

Depending on the procedure the recovery time from this operation can be somewhat of an extended process. If both arms are operated on, then the patient must have assistance during the first few days after the surgery. Both arms must be immobilized to ensure proper healing. The patient will also be required to wear an elastic support garment to compress and reinforce the new shape of the arm. This garment can generally be removed after about two weeks, but the area around the arm will still be bruised and swollen. This however, is completely normal. After about another week, the remaining staples and sutures will be removed. The final swelling should be completely gone after about two months.

Elderly people and their caregivers should know about elderly skin care. It is important to realize some of the common traits, problems and solutions. Elderly people will have some specific issues that need to be recognized and treated effectively. This page will help you care best for elderly skin.

Elderly Skin Traits

The most common factor among elderly skin is the fact that it is usually always dry. This is because as we age, our skin begins to thin. As it thins, it is less able to retain moisture, thus leading to dry skin.

Dry skin can lead to problems in a younger person, but can cause even more problems for the elderly. The thin skin is easier torn, and that lets bacteria get in. The elderly have a harder time fighting bacteria off, so you don’t want anything to increase their chances of infection.

Treating Elderly Skin

Elderly skin care will always include caring for dry skin. Treating dry skin is not hard; it just requires astute attention and getting in the habit of taking care of it.Here’s how you do it.

Keep It Clean: Always keep the skin clean. This applies especially to the feet, groin, underareas and armpits. Individuals who sweat should wear loose, absorbent clothing that will wick the wetness away. If skin stays wet too long, it can become prone to fungal infection, rashes and even become extremely dry.

However, avoid hot baths or too frequent showering/bathing. This will dry skin out further. Warm water is the most effective, and bathing every other day is probably the most frequent to get.

Cream based cleansers for face and body are perfect. Often, only localized areas need to be soaped; the rest of the body can be flushed with warm water. Avoid very bubbly products, as they usually contain harsh detergents that dry out skin.

Keep It Hydrated: Keeping dry skin hydrated is the best way to avoid potential problems like cracking, pain and itchiness (which we’ll discuss below). After showering or bathing, lather all over with a thick hydrating cream. This will help seal in the body’s natural moisture, and help skin be more comfortable.

For the day, invest in a heavy-duty moisturizer with sunscreen. At night, use a hydrating night cream before going to bed.

Keep It From Itching: Elderly skin care is all about dry skin. But what makes skin dry? Well, as we age, our bodies decrease their production of oily secretions, which help keep skin soft, supple and hydrated. This decrease leads to drier skin, which can become itchy and uncomfortable. And when our skin itches, we scratch it.

This can be harmful for an older person, as their skin is more thin, and more susceptible to tearing. Which just leads to a bigger problem. So, to reduce itchiness, try using a bathing oil after bathing. Be very careful to avoid applying to hands and feet so the risk of slipping is minimized. Apply talc to areas that sweat to minimize any fungal growth which can lead to itching. And keeping humidifiers in popular rooms will help relieve itching.

Keep An Eye On It: Elderly skin care should also always include routine examinations of the skin for skin cancer and other skin disorders. Look for moles that are changing shape (asymmetrical), color, or are just looking different. Look for areas that are peeling, red, irritated, chapped, cracked or have severe itching. Keep an eye out for new growths, sores that do not heal, the appearance of new sores and pain. Knowing elderly skin care will help you recognize these potential problems. If you notice any of these conditions, please see a doctor.

Don’t Forget The Feet!

As we focus on elderly skin care, let’s not forget one of the most important (yet often overlooked) area of the body. The feet. The older a person gets, the more prone the feet become to problems. Corns, calluses, warts, dry skin, fungal infections, ingrown toenails, blisters and other foot deformities are common. Proper care of your feet, including regular checkups by a doctor, can alleviate most of these problems. The feet are also a great way to tell if a person is at risk for diabetes.

The Routine: Clean feet thoroughly with warm water, and dry them completely. Remember to get between the toes! Thoroughly massage lotion or moisturizer into the feet, avoided the spaces between toes. Trim the nails straight across, and not right next to the nailbed. Round sharp edges with a file.

If the person is immobile, do daily foot exercises to get blood circulating.

Always wear comfortable shoes, even around the house. This is to protect the feet from outside injury, as well as discomfort caused by inappropriate footwear.

The Inspection: Each day, inspect feet for a change in color, dryness, swelling or tenderness. Check for any of the ailments listed above, from corns to blisters. Be aware of any different sensations, like tingling, numbness or pain. Seek treatment if any of these signs are apparent.

Now you know all you need to about elderly skin care. Go forth, be healthy, and enjoy these years.

A drug-free hair loss product, from a surprising source, may be the new answer to thinning hair, alopecia, and male pattern baldness.

"You have no idea what it’s like," says Joe Rice, a 60-year-old professional from Fort Wayne, Indiana. "I started losing my hair in my twenties. It’s miserable. It has a way of shaping your whole life."

Joe’s worn a toupee for years. No one sees him without it, not even his closest friends. He’s tried "just about everything" to stop hair loss, including Rogaine and Propecia, without success. But deep down, he still holds out hope.

"I know the drugs work for some people, but they didn’t work for me," he sighs. "Just show me one new hair, and I’m a customer for life."

A Serious Problem

Joe is not alone. Millions of men and women suffer in silence from alopecia, baldness and thinning hair. And while hair loss isn’t fatal, it is a serious condition with profound psychological effects. For many, hair loss brings feelings of shame, despair, and crippled self-esteem.

New Hope from the Orient

Since 1999, a group of scientists in Japan, led by researcher T. Takahashi, has been studying botanical extracts looking for a safe, effective solution for hair growth. After testing over a thousand different extracts, they found three promising natural chemicals. One was from barley. One from Chardonnay grapes. And one- by far the most potent- was an extract from ordinary apples.

Move Over Minoxidil

One year later, the scientists announced even more striking findings to the international community. They compared the apple extract, known as procyanidin B-2, to the proven hair growth drug minoxidil in cell cultures.

Their results seemed almost impossible: in head-to-head tests, the apple chemical proved to be twice as effective as minoxidil in stimulating new hair growth.

In further experiments on mice, the apple procyanidins, as well as minoxidil, repeatedly produced "extensive hair growth."

Proven in Double-Blind Clinical Trials

In clinical trials on humans, the results were even more exciting. The procyanidins from apples consistently grew new hair in men with male pattern baldness, the most stubborn form of unwanted hair loss- and without any of the side effects of hair loss drugs.

Scientists are normally conservative when it comes to conclusions. But the statements from the Takahashi group were unequivocal. "Procyanidin B-2 therapy," they wrote, "shows potential as a promising cure for male pattern baldness."

For Joe, and 60 million other men and women, this research means new hope. "Of course I’ll try it," he says. "Just show me one new hair…"

The major benefit of tanning for the human body is the strengthening of the bones. That is, the absorbed ultraviolet radiation activates substances in the skin the much needed vitamin D. And vitamin D is important in making the bones tough.

There is, however, another documented benefit of tanning. Tanning helps the skin protect itself from further exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This was reported in the September 1999 issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. The report was authored by Dr. Barbare A. Gilchrest and Dr. Mark S. Eller. Both worked at the Department of Dermatology at the Boston University School of Medicine.

The journal report stated five important points:

1. The UV radiation produces the protective melanin pigments.

Why are melanin pigments considered protective? The melanin in the skin helps the body expel excess energy from further ultraviolet exposure. The excess energy can cause harm but, with the aid of melanin, this is removed from the body in the form of heat. The melanin can also deactivate the free radicals, which are infamous for their destructive action on the body.

2. Tanned skin prevents UVR injury.

Related to above findings, the authors reported that a tanned skin is less prone to blisters and sunburn. Blisters and sunburns are UVR damages that a skin sustains when the skin can no longer tolerate the UV it receives. A tanned skin has a higher tolerance of UV rays. Thus, having a tanned skin is similar to wearing a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor of 3-5.

3. Tanning provides photo-protection.

When a person undergoes the tanning process, the stratum corneum layer of his skin is considerably thickened. With this thicker layer, the skin becomes less sensitive to the ultraviolet radiation. Such is called photo-protection. A person with pale white skin may not attain the dark olive color that he desires but his stratum corneum has achieved a certain thickness that gives him photo-protection.

4. Tanning elevates the skin’s repair capacity.

One of the greatest fears of people when they face tanning is the disease called skin cancer. But skin cancer only happens when a person abuses the tanning process. That is, he stays in the tanning bed longer than what is recommended by the manufacturer or the tanning salon professional. Skin cancer happens when too many damaged and abnormal cells are produced. With gradual and responsible tanning, the skin’s capacity to repair itself is actually enhanced. When the skin repairs itself, it gets rid off abnormal cells and fixes damage cells.

5. Both natural tan and acquired tan gives the same skin protection.

All the above-described protection obtained from a tanned skin is not limited to a natural tan. An acquired tanned skin can also provide the same protection.

Want to look sexy? (or should we say sexier!) Well, your eyeglasses can help you achieve that look. No, you did not read that wrong, and yes, we did say eyeglasses and not something else. Surprised? You need not be.

Gone are the days when having a vision problem and wearing eyeglasses was considered so dreadful. The perception was that eye glasses take away from your looks and make you look real geeky. Well, not anymore. By paying a little bit attention to what you are buying and following these simple suggestions for buying eyewear, you can ensure that you have picked the perfect pair of glasses for yourself - something that adds to your personality, not robs you of it.

Things To Keep In Mind When Buying Eyeglasses

1) Know Yourself

It is vital that your eyewear be chosen keeping in mind your individuality and personality. All people are not of the same type and hence you cannot just buy any pair of eyeglasses that may enhance someone else’s personality. If being conventional works for you and is demanded at your office, then you should look for a traditional pair of eyeglasses as well. Stay away from peculiar and unusual shapes and stick to the basic oval or rectangular shape. Colors that are suitable in such a case are black, burgundy, brown, silver, grey, and golden.

If, on the other hand, conformity is not your thing and you are an artistic sort of a person, let your eyeglasses reflect that too. Go in for unique and atypical shapes and colors such as red, yellow, and green. You could even go a step further and choose tinted lenses for your eyewear instead of the clear ones.

2) Pay Attention To Your Features

Once again, not all of us have the same features and looks, thus there can be no one pair of eye glasses that can suit us all. While buying eyewear, you should pay attention to your looks and your features. Delicate features are enhanced by glasses that are small and not too loud. If your face is broad and you have strong features, you should buy eye glasses that are big and bold too.

3) Pay Attention To Your Coloring

This is a major factor in the quest for the perfect pair of eye glasses. People are typically classified as having warm coloring or cool coloring. If your skin has a yellow shade to it, then you are considered to have warm coloring. If, on the other hand, your skin is a bluish color, then you have cool coloring. When choosing eyeglasses it is important to be aware of your skin tone as this will decide the color of your eyeglasses. Warm skin colored people should opt for eyewear that is in a pale and soft color, something that is a bit low-key. For those who have cool skin coloring, louder and darker shades in eyewear are more appropriate.

4) The Lowdown On Brands

What is the need for all these tips on buying eyeglasses when you can simply pick a reputed brand and be done with it? Is that what you think too? Well, you could not be more wrong. Branded eyewear may be of superior quality than the unbranded kind, but that does not mean that a branded pair of eyeglasses will enhance your personality. Don’t just buy eyewear because of its name. Try it on and think of buying it only if the pair is indeed doing something for your face and your overall looks. If you have to go with an un-branded pair, then so be it. It is certainly not the end of the world.

5) Selecting Proper Lenses

Make sure that the lens of your eyeglass is of the right size. When you wear your glasses, the lenses should be such that your eyes are in their center. If your eyes are high or low on the lens, then the size is not right. Another consideration with lenses is whether or not to buy anti-reflective lenses. If you spend long hours staring at a screen (TV, PC, etc) or spend considerable time doing anything that puts a glare into your eye, you should opt for anti-reflective lenses. However, as these lenses can cost a pretty penny, you may want to avoid them if you do not engage in much activity that causes reflections in your eyes.

In addition to the above, some other things to keep in mind when looking for the perfect pair of eye glasses are:

• If you do wear prescription eye glasses, do not forget to take your eyewear prescription along while buying eyewear.

• For older people, cat eyed shaped glasses can work wonders as they help to hide your age and make you look younger.

Thus, if you choose eyeglasses using this guide, then the next time you wear your glasses, people will not be turning away from you but will be turning to give you a second glance!

Women wanting to be beautiful is as old as civilization. At different times in history, women have ingested arsenic to improve their complexions, used warm urine from young boys to remove their freckles and took belladonna to produce dreamy eyes. The beauty business is a $160 billion, a year, global industry. The cosmetic surgery business is a $20 billion business. These industries play on the fear of looking ugly as much as the need to look beautiful and for good reason. Attractive people are perceived to be more intelligent, more successful and better in bed. Although the beauty industry has traditionally marketed to women, the male market is increasing.

Part of the challenge which the beauty industry faces is truth in advertising. Increasingly, consumers have tested products which make grandiose claims, only to be disappointed. The current trend is on well being as well as outer beauty. A healthy individual, in good physical shape, is perceived to be an attractive individual. Here are four factors which can help you to achieve beauty from the inside out.

Water. Water is an essential component of the human body. When we fail to replace lost water we can enter a state of dehydration. If you have ever been thirsty, you have experienced the beginnings of dehydration. A rule of thumb is: check your urine. If your urine is clear to light colored you are adequately hydrated. A lack of water in your system can lead to overeating. Sometimes, when we feel that we are hungry we are actually thirsty. When you feel hunger, have a glass or two of water and wait 15 minutes. If you are still hungry, eat something. I keep a 32 ounce bottle of water with me at all times and sip from it throughout the day. I usually finish two bottles a day.

Oxygen. According to Dr. Spencer Way in the Journal of American Association of Physicians, “ Insufficient oxygen means insufficient biological energy that can result in anything from mild fatigue to life threatening disease.” Sufficient oxygen is necessary for a healthy life. We can exist for up to 40 days without food, 4 days without water but no more than 3 minutes without oxygen. Due to pollution and the thinning ozone layer, oxygen levels in our air are believed to be around 21%. Adequate oxygen levels are very important in that hostile organisms cannot live in an oxygen rich environment.

Colostrum and Leptin. Colostrum is a natural food, rich in anti aging and immune factors. Leptin is a small hormone-like protein primarily produced by fat cells. Small fat cells produce more leptin than large fat cells. Leptin is important because it sends out a signal to suppress appetite. Some of the benefits of the colostrum/leptin combination are: inch loss, building of lean muscle, high energy levels, tightening and toning of the skin, better sleep and much more. I believe this to be an essential combination in achieving beauty from the inside out.

Sleep. Adequate sleep is important on more than one level. It is the number one defense against stress. Cortisol, a hormone, is released during stressful events and can, over time, lead to a risk of infection and disease. Sleep is also important in minimizing weight gain. Many Americans that are sleep deprived are also overweight. The amount of sleep suggested for the average person is 8-10 hours. When Sophia Loren, a popular actress and reigning beauty in the sixties and seventies, was asked how she still looked so beautiful at an older age, her answer was that she naps every day.

As a final note: If you are taking vitamin supplements, your urine will be darker for several hours after taking them. There are many companies that advertise products that profess to raise oxygen levels in your system. As always, use due diligence in your choice of products. If you try and follow this guide to beauty, you should see results in the form of looking and feeling younger and healthier.

No cellulite cream can counteract the effects of a sedentary lifestyle, for instance. Neither can a cream magically restore circulation or drop excess weight from a body that does very little and takes in more than it needs.

The best lotions, the most evolved lotions, cannot make up for diets composed of fast foods eaten on the run and deep fried fatty concoctions with little or no nutritional value.

Neither can lotions reduce stress for a body rigid with it and stress is often an element in the problem of cellulite. Stress does not have to be physical to have very physical effects.

No lotion exists that can reverse genetic inheritances or balance hormones reliably. These are all factors in the formation of cellulite.

So, now that we are clear on exactly what cellulite creams cannot do, we can move on to what they may be useful for. Now you have them in perspective you may be less likely to believe advertising that tells you that you needn’t move off the sofa. That all you have to do is languidly stretch out your hand and apply this miracle lotion and you will look like the model in the picture who is often impossibly beautiful, prepubescent and photographed in a good light.

What some cellulite creams can do rather nicely is supplement your treatment program. In this support capacity they can even be quite impressive. Some creams will ardently claim to be all things to all women with cellulite. Personally, I’d still watch the diet, do the exercise and keep the stress levels down.

Broadly speaking the creams on the market can be divided into those whose ingredients are botanical and those that are chemical. Caffeine, and its derivatives, are natural tissue decongestants used in a number of cellulite creams. Many prefer the "decaffeinated" versions that use potent herbs like horse chestnut, gotu kola, ivy and seaweeds to achieve the same results. Many ingredients not only assist in the sloughing off of toxins but also in the stimulation of circulation. Not, of course, as much as a good run around the block would do.

Many cellulite creams claim to contain patented transport systems that facilitate the delivery of ingredients through the outer layers and into the actual site of the damage. This, they say– and it makes sense–is a principal reason for the success of their particular product.

How a cellulite cream is applied is also an important factor. Methods of application vary from the quick rub at home to high tech patented processes that use light frequencies along with specially designed rollers and suctions that help to mobilize the tissue and transport the good stuff deep down into the cellulite stricken areas.
